Shinchon Urban Regeneration Youth Culture Advancement Base Development Design

The Sinchon area was in the spotlight as the birthplace of university culture in the 1970s and 1980s, with a number of universities. However, as the entertainment culture spreads in the 1990s, the net function of cultural production is lost, and its current status is lost to the nearby Hongdae area and is in a slump. Accordingly, the Seodaemun-gu Office has recently selected the 'car-free street' of Yonsei-ro, a famous street, and Ewha Womans University-gil as the central axis, and has been making tangible results little by little as a result of continuous efforts.

Urban Fabric of Sinchon

Changcheon Cultural Park, along with Star Square, is an important starting point and ending point of the central axis of urban regeneration for strengthening the connection to the central street of Sinchon that connects the famous street, Baramsan Village, Changcheon Neighborhood Park, Ewha Womans University Road, and Daehyeon Park. It is very reasonable and desirable to establish a youth cultural advance base. However, despite the fact that Changcheon Cultural Park is one of the three major open spaces in the Sinchon area along with Changcheon Neighborhood Park and Daehyeon Park, it does not function sufficiently as a park. Should be. In addition, in order to strengthen the connection to the Sinchon central street, it would be right to consider the design direction of an open park that is reconstructed within the park by accepting the Urban Fabric of Sinchon rather than existing as an island in the city. .

Event Platform

In the end, in designing this design, a group of small buildings centered on the event plaza and event yard that embraces the flow of the famous street rather than the landmark as an object built in a single building in the park does not hinder the landscape of the park. directed in a direction not To this end, relatively large facilities, multi-purpose halls, common conference rooms, practice rooms, and shared kitchens are placed in the basement, and small facilities and youth culture cafes are distributed on the ground and mostly placed on top of the underground structures. Let's call it the Event Platform. We anticipate that, paradoxically, a landmark as a community that harmonizes with the landscape of the park, a cluster of buildings, and an open space will become a more suitable landmark for Changcheon Cultural Park rather than the objective landmark effect of a single building.

Landmark as Object vs. Landmark as a community (Collective Form)

The landmark (Collective Form) strategy of placing large-scale facilities underground and dispersing relatively small facilities on the ground creates the effect that the park becomes a cultural advance base and the cultural advance base itself becomes a park. Whereas the Landmark as Object strategy, where a single building is erected in the park, limits the approach, it functions as an open space that makes the influx of citizens into the park and cultural base more flexible. It is conceivable that , assemblies, exhibitions, and commercial activities (flea markets) take place freely in the event plaza and yard, which are open spaces of the park/culture base. In addition, the basement multi-purpose hall is planned to be flexible according to the use, and in some cases, it can be used as a large space from the event yard to the event garden by extending the area to a common conference room. When a large-scale event is held, the shared kitchen becomes a service facility, and in normal times, it is connected to the youth culture cafe on the ground floor and functions as a resting place for citizens, and at the same time becomes a hall to enter from the ground floor.

Restructure of Urban Fabric of Sinchon

The small group of buildings created in the park creates an effect of bringing the street structure of Sinchon into the park while providing an open space by forming an ambiguous boundary of the event plaza. Moreover, studios and offices facing the north road are planned to be expanded and changed according to the situation by using light materials for the lightweight steel structure of 3M*3M modules. This is a strategy suitable for providing cultural experiences and cultural tourism information services of Sinchon while facilitating the influx of citizens by actively responding to the northern road, which will be planned as a pedestrian road in accordance with the Park Cafe Street Specialized Landscape Guidelines. . At the edge of the park / cultural advance base, tall trees provide ample tree canopy and benches are placed here and there to take a break. In addition, a fountain plaza was placed in the eastern corner to further strengthen the inflow from the famous street and star plaza. In the western corner, where the influx of pedestrians is judged to be the least, legally necessary 7 parking lots (including 1 parking lot for the disabled) were arranged. Consider building a parking lot.
