Korea Medical Association, New Assembly Hall Competition
The Korea Medical Association was established in 1908 as a member of a medical corporation that has acquired medical licenses from the Republic of Korea. The Icheon-dong Assembly Hall, which was built in 1974, was found to be in serious danger by receiving a 'D grade' as a result of the precise safety diagnosis conducted in 2016. The council decided to push for new construction at the current hall site in 2017. The basic direction of the plan in the design of the new hall is to create a differentiated new symbol to prepare for the 100 years of Korean Medical Association.
The land surrounded by the high-rise apartments has a relatively small volume when viewed from the riverside due to the restriction of the number of floors, which has a disadvantage that the recognition rate is low. You should also consider the gaze overlooking the high-rise. The 20M road to the south of the site, which connects to the Riverside North Road, is restricted to vehicle access by motorway, and the main entry and exit of pedestrians and vehicles use the 6M road to the north. Therefore, the new construction hall has the 'symbolic front' of the South, which is seen from the riverside, and the 'actual front', which is the North side to enter the building.
One Body, Five Facade
Considering the characteristics of the land surrounded by the high-rise apartments, the building emphasizes its existence by utilizing the maximum volume of the single mass. The volume of the 5 stories above the ground is located to the north of the boundaries of the historic cultural and aesthetic district, avoiding height restrictions. The ground part is planned three-dimensionally by the outer space of the south and north side, the pedestrian passage connecting this space, and the vehicle circulation. A single mass is recalled as a piloti structure for the efficient use of above ground and partially emptied for the roof garden.
The single body, the 'single mass' method, has a complete form again with five facades. Each facade is roughly divided into two types depending on the manner in which the facade corresponds to the surroundings. The south facade with 'symbolic front' and the roof side overlooking the high level are the main facade, while the rest facade including the 'actual facade' takes the sub facade strategy and the two types are similar but different .
Like the white gown that symbolizes the doctor, the new Korea Medical Association Assembly Hall wears a white coat made of new construction material. The UHPC panel applied to the facade is a new technology that creates a unique appearance with excellent shape and strength. The main facade, which is the symbolic front, forms a special impression symbolizing medicine, life, and union by making crosses to express petals and snake's skin as a whole. The sub-facade that constitutes the actual front represents modernity expressing the history, tradition and trust by creating a soft envelope with a curve in the classical architecture that regards proportion and order as important. The two types of facade using curves are strategies for implementing differentiated impressions from surrounding apartment complexes.
As a result, he remained in the Grand Prize (second prize), but he was remembered as a work filled with experimental ideas about ideas and implementation methods of new symbols.
